Planets (Grahas)

Luminaries — Sun (Surya/Ravi), Moon (Chandra/Som).

Non-luminaries — Mercury (Budh), Venus (Shukra), Mars (Mangal/Bhaum/Kuj), Jupiter (Guru/Brihaspati), Saturn (Shani/Manda).

Lunar Orbital Nodes — Rāhu (Ascending Lunar Node / North Lunar Node / Dragon's Head), Ketu (Descending Lunar Node / South Lunar Node /

                                         Dragon's Tail).

Additional — Uranus (Herschel), Neptune, Pluto.

Rāhu is considered to be the counterpart of Saturn (Shanivad Rāhu) while Ketu is considered to be the counterpart of Mars (Kujavat Ketu).

In another view, Rāhu is Rāhu and Ketu is Ketu i.e. they are not to be compared as any other planet. They have their own individuality.

Ascendant is the intersection of Terrestrial (Earth's) Horizon with the Ecliptic. Ascendant represents the planet Earth in the birth chart. To be specific, Ascendant in the D-1 chart is also called Prime Ascendant.

Ecliptic is the Sun's apparent path in the sky. Zodiac belt is the celestial strip along the Ecliptic that contains the planets, the zone where the planets can be found in the sky.

Movement of the planets in the sky is: East -> Zenith -> West -> Nadir -> East (along the Ecliptic path)

Rāhu and Ketu being geometrical points on the ecliptic, travel backwards (in reverse direction) along the zodiac.

Planetary Dignities

Planets are happiest when they are placed in their respective Exaltation signs, and saddest when they are placed in their respective Debilitation signs. The order of happiness granted by placements is as follows:

Exaltation > Moolatrikona > Own > Friend > Neutral > Enemy > Dushkona > Debilitation

Note 1: For every planet, Exaltation and Debilitation signs are mutually opposite.

Note 2: For every planet except Mercury, Exaltation sign is not a sign of its ownership.

Note 3: For every planet except Moon, Moolatrikona sign is a sign of its ownership.

Sun is exalted in Aries, the 1st sign of Natural Zodiac.

Sun is debilitated in Libra, the 1st sign of Natural Zodiac.

Saturn is exalted in Libra, the 7th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Saturn is debilitated in Aries, the 7th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Sun and Saturn are great enemies.

Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, the 4th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, the 10th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Mars is exalted in Capricorn, the 10th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Mars is debilitated in Cancer, the 4th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Jupiter and Mars are great friends.

Mercury is exalted in Virgo, the 6th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Mercury is debilitated in Pisces, the 12th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Venus is exalted in Pisces, the 12th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Venus is debilitated in Virgo, the 6th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Mercury and Venus are great friends.

Moon is exalted in Taurus, the 2nd sign of Natural Zodiac.

Moon is debilitated in Scorpio, the 8th sign of Natural Zodiac.

Ketu is exalted in Scorpio, the 8th sign of Natural Zodiac. (As per BPHS and popular belief.)

Ketu is debilitated in Taurus, the 2nd sign of Natural Zodiac. (As per BPHS and popular belief.)

Moon and Ketu are great enemies.

Also, the above selection of Scorpio as the exaltation sign for Ketu preserves the symmetry in two ways. One is the pairing with Moon similar to other pairings. Other is the analogy with Sun-Saturn pair. Sun is a luminary, exalted in a sign of Mars. Saturn is Sun's enemy, exalted in a sign of Venus. In contrast, Moon is a luminary, exalted in a sign of Venus. So, to maintain symmetry, Ketu should be exalted in a sign of Mars, Scorpio (as it is opposite to Moon's exaltation sign).

Aspects

Pārāshari Planetary Aspects (Graha Drishti)

All physical planets aspect 7th sign from themselves.

Mars additionally aspect 4th and 8th signs from itself.

Jupiter additionally aspect 5th and 9th signs from itself.

Saturn additionally aspect 3rd and 10th signs from itself.

Rāhu and Ketu, being non-physical planets, cast no aspect.

Unlike in Western Astrology where aspects are considered degree to degree, in Indian Astrology aspects are considered sign to sign. If Jupiter is at 29° Pisces and Saturn is at 1° Aries, they are not considered to be conjunct or influencing each other. But if in the same scenario, Mercury is at 29° Aries, Saturn and Mercury are considered to be conjunct and influencing one another. This proposition needs to be verified.

Generally, the strength of aspect for a planet is:

1st from itself — 100% = 60 Virupas

2nd from itself — Negligible

3rd from itself — 25% = 15 Virupas

4th from itself — 75% = 45 Virupas

5th from itself — 50% = 30 Virupas

6th from itself — Negligible

7th from itself — 100% = 60 Virupas

8th from itself — 75% = 45 Virupas

9th from itself — 50% = 30 Virupas

10th from itself — 25% = 15 Virupas

11th from itself — Negligible

12th from itself — Negligible

Note that Mars casts extra 25% aspect to 4th and 8th signs each from itself

whereas Jupiter (next farthest planet) casts extra 50% aspect to 5th and 9th signs each from itself

while Saturn (next farthest planet) casts extra 75% aspect to 3rd and 10th signs each from itself.

Speculation:

  i. If Mars casts extra aspect to 4th and 8th, its aspect on other houses (except 1st and 7th) should diminish or remain same??

ii. If Jupiter casts extra aspect to 5th and 9th, its aspect on other houses (except 1st and 7th) should diminish or remain same??

iii. If Saturn casts extra aspect to 3rd and 10th, its aspect on other houses (except 1st and 7th) should diminish or remain same??

iv. It seems from this scheme that Uranus aspects additionally 2nd and 11th signs from itself

while Neptune aspects additionally 6th and 12th signs from itself (not applied or verified yet)

Jaimini Sign Aspects (Rāshi Drishti)

A Fixed Sign aspects all Cardinal (Movable) signs except the one adjacent to itself. In other words, a Fixed sign aspects 3rd, 6th and 9th sign from it.

A Cardinal (Movable) sign aspects all Fixed signs except the one adjacent to itself. In other words, a Cardinal sign aspects 5th, 8th and 11th sign from it.

A Dual (Mutable) sign aspects all other Dual (Mutable) signs. In other words, a Dual sign aspects 4th, 7th and 10th sign from it.

Hence, each sign (Rāshi) aspects exactly 3 signs in the Jaimini system. Thus, a planet aspects other planet(s) in the sign(s) aspected by the sign it occupies in the chart.

Note that in both Parāshara and Jaimini systems, 2nd and 12th houses are unaspected, whereas in Jaimini system, 6th house from a Fixed sign is aspected, and 11th house from a Cardinal sign is aspected.

Bhrigu Saral Paddhati aka BSP (House-Age correspondence)

General BSP — A Snapshot Prediction Method (also mentioned in BPHS):

Each house starting from the Ascendant represents one year in the life of an individual. This goes in a cyclical manner with a 12-year period after which the cycle repeats itself from the Ascendant.

Divide the ongoing age by 12. Note the remainder obtained. Things related to the house whose rank is equal to remainder (see 12th house if remainder is zero) are likely to happen at that age. This consideration is made irrespective of the planets or signs in the house. For example, 1st house related event "Birth" happens at age 1. Similarly, speech training and early learning occur at age 2. 12th house i.e. Loss of self (Puberty) takes place commonly at age 12. College education (5th house) begins usually at age 17 (Remainder 5).

Additionally, note the placement of the lord of the relevant house. The significations of the planet and the house occupied by it will also contribute the event. Also note the houses in which those signs are placed in the natural zodiac.

For example, in 28th year, 4th house related results are expected. Now, for a Cancer Asc chart, in 28th year, 4th house has sign Libra whose lord is Venus. Libra is 7th house in natural zodiac. So marriage can occur in the 28th year. Foreign travel can take place since 7th house also implies travel abroad. One can become mother at 28th year as 4th house is mother.

Specific BSP Techniques: (always refer to the running age) (count in the usual zodiacal direction; don't go reverse for nodes or retrograde planets)

(Follow the procedure described above to synthesize the results; predict multiple results if realized and applicable)

Guru-Budh-Shukra Yoga: If Jupiter, Mercury and Venus are linked, the native is exceptionally rich, famous and fortunate.

If Venus is associated with Mercury or Jupiter, the native gains riches in Venus dasha. Jupiter's dasha brings poverty. Mercury dasha gives mixed results.

Ārudha

Calculation

To calculate the Ārudha of a house, first determine the house cusp (for nth house, add (n–1)×30 to the Ascendant longitude).

Then add to the longitude of the house lord, the longitudinal displacement of the house lord from the house cusp.

The resultant longitude is the longitude of the Ārudha of the house under consideration.

Mark the Ārudhas of all the 12 houses. Ārudha (pada) of a particular house (bhāva) is called the bhāva-pada (with "bhāva" replaced by the name of the house).

Interpretation

  1. If Ārudha of a house falls in a bad house viz. 6th / 8th / 12th house (from Lagna), it hampers the significations of the house.

  2. If Ārudha(s) of bad house(s) viz. 6th / 8th / 12th house (from Lagna) fall in a house, its significations are ruined.

  3. If the dispositor of the Ārudha of a house is afflicted in the chart, the significations of the house suffer.
